HistoryTigerlily watched in horror as everything she loved fell apart. It all started with a small group of cats.
-------------------------------------------------------------- Tigerlily was playing with some lilies, tiger lilies of course when the strangers arrived. A large pale cat walked up to her father and mother. Even though the cat was large, he looked weak and his fur was matted and dirty. With him a small group of six or seven cats that looked just as bad as him, some looked worse. "Can you help us?" The pale cat asked. "We just want some shelter for a couple of nights, some of us are sick and we've been traveling for some days now." Tigerlily went and stood by her mother. "Who are they?" She asked. "I don't know, but I think we should help." Her mother said, with a pleading look to her mate. "We will allow you to stay with us and share our food, but don't cause trouble for us." Tigerlily's father said gruffly. He didn't trust these cats but he couldn't send them away looking as they did either. "Thank you!" The pale cat dipped his head and turned to his cats. "We will be staying here for a few days until we can travel, please don't cause trouble for this kind family." Tigerlily saw a cat that looked to be about 16 moons, not much older than herself, she bounded up to him. "Hi, I'm Tigerlily!" She purred. The cat looked a bit startled. "Oh..I'm Bramblepaw." The dark tom said. Tigerlily noticed a somewhat fresh bite wound on his flank. "We can heal that for you!" Bramblepaw just nodded as Tigerlily bounded off to her father, who was treating other cats' wounds. Tigerlily returned to Bramblepaw with her father. "Let's take a look at this bite my daughter was talking about." Bramblepaw nervously showed the larger tom his wound. "How'd you get a nasty bite like this? It looks like it could become infected at any moment." Bramblepaw just looked away without a word. Tigerlily's father huffed, annoyed, and brought over some herbs and used long tough leaves to wrap around Brmblepaw as a bandage. "There! Hopefully, it won't become infected." The large cat said before turning away to treat the other cats. "I'll show you around!" Tigerlily offered. Bramblepaw looked toward a bigger cat who gave the young cat a nod. "Okay.." Bramblepaw followed Tigerlily around as she showed him some of her favorite places close to the den. Tigerlily's mother and father helped take care of some of the sicker cats as Tigerlily was showing Bramblepaw around. The two young cats even played together which brightened all the cats' moods. Watching two younger cats enjoying themselves and having fun always brings smiles to older cats even in hard times. That night, Tigerlily was having trouble falling asleep so she went outside to stretch and there she saw Bramblepaw, his wrappings several tail-lengths away. He was walking around disoriented and meowing profusely, taking no notice of Tigerlily. "Bramblepaw? What's wrong?" She asked inching a little closer to the tom. Suddenly he lashed out as Tigerlily. She jumped backward with a surprised mrow. Bramblepaw's fur stood wildly and he was walking dizzily around. Spittle flew from his mouth as he hissed and bit at the air towards Tigerlily. She could see in his eyes that he wasn't himself, they were hazy and his pupils were wide. It was like there was no cat in there. The commotion woke up several others, including Tigerlily's parents. "What's going on?" Tigerlily's father demanded. The pale cat quickly grabbed Tigerlily and pulled her away from Bramblepaw. "Don't let him bite you! It's a disease. We thought it was gone. It makes everything crazy." Tigerlily's father narrowed his eyes. "You brought a dangerous disease like that here? What causes it to go away?" The pale cat shook his head. "We don't know, cats usually die not long after becoming like this." Tigerlily's father looked down at his daughter, then to his mate. "Who else is infected?" All the cats looked at each other and shook their heads. Bramblepaw had gotten closer as they talked and lunged at the pale cat. The large cat hissed as Bramblepaw's teeth sunk into his shoulder. The pale cat shook the younger one off and threw him into the forest. That's when another cat started acting wild too. No one had noticed that one of them was still in the den and starting to show signs of the disease. Chaos erupted as the cats started fighting each other. The larger infected cat ended up biting Tigerlily's mother and father as they fought to defend their kit. The pale cat had gotten rid of Bramblepaw and was trying to calm his friends and help Tigerlily's parents with the other infected cat. Tigerlily could only flee into a large patch of her flowers and watch in horror as cats fell and yowling echoed through the forest and meadow. By daylight only a few cats remained: the large pale one and a few of his friends and Tigerlily's father who sat in mourning over his mate who had fallen in a fight with another infected cat. He turned to his daughter. "You can't stay here. I was bitten by the infected cat. That's how it spreads, right?" The large pale cat nodded sadly. Tigerlily didn't want to go, she wanted everything to go back to normal but it would never be normal. The disease would take over her father and end both of them. She could only do the hardest thing she had ever done; nod with cloudy eyes and walk away from everything she loved, destroyed by a group of diseased cats. "Goodbye, father." 954 words |
