Clan Overview
From the stars, knowledge. From the moon, compassion. From the clan, family.
The cats of Howlclan are taught to never kill unless needed, as is the Warrior Code. They welcome strangers with open paws and sheathed claws. They are swift and agile, outrunning their opponents easily and quickly. They are also known for being sneaky eventhough there are no hiding places in Howlclan's territory the cats are quiet on their feet and their swiftness makes them all the more scarier when stalking prey or cats.
Howlclan cats aren't very perceptive under trees and brush and often end up scratched up and thorn ridden after a trip through the forest. They take to the meadow instead.
Howlclan cats are also good at night time hunting and patrolling, the darker furred members especially taking advantage of this time. Though not specializing in swimming Howlclan apprentices that show promise are taught to swim and fish since they live so close to a river.
Howlclan cats mostly prey on mice and rabbit but in Leafbare will hunt bats in a nearby cave that houses them. In Greenleaf is the time for fish and voles while Newleaf is the season of younger, stronger and faster prey.
Leaf-fall is a particularly dangerous time for the clan as coyotes are more prominent during this time, they normally are rare to uncommon during the other seasons but Leaf-fall is the coyotes'.
Foxes, coyotes, hawks and very rarely wild dogs (strays) are predators to the cats of Howlclan. They are in the process of learning how to take down hawks as of late but haven't progressed very far.
Howlclan cats are generally sleeker and long-legged specializing in speed and weaker in physical strength.

The Territory

Howlclan resides in a rocky hilly meadow. It's very open and the ground is mostly hard near the edges of the meadow. Leafbare is cruel in the territory as there is little shelter from snow, the caves and rocks that make up the dens keep cats warm during the cold and cool during hot Greenleaf days. There are bushes near the camp and forest that borders the territory and even in a hollow of dead trees.
Next to Howlclan's camp is a forest of stone, the "Stone Forest." Weasels, nonvenomous snakes, rodents, and lizards are found here. Training is also done here as it is safer and closer to the camp.
Winds blow through the territory often causing a group of rocky outcrops to make noise from time to time as wind blows through holes in them giving them the name Howling Rocks. Certain ceremonies are held here and the rocks gave the clan its name.
Dead Hollow is a dead part of a forest of pine trees, a place normally avoided due to it being a place where snakes live, some venomous and some harmless and editable. New and young apprentices are never to rarely taken to Dead Hollow due to the danger of being bitten by a venomous snake.
Some caves reside near the edge of the territory, to the clan these clans are known as the "Bat Caves" since it is the home to bats, an underground pond is in the caves and cats will go here to hunt bats during hard times when Leafbare hits.
The leader and medicine cat communicate with Starclan via the Pool of the Ancients. It is located in the Forest of Echoes. The Forest of Echoes is at the base of the mountains and some of it is on a small island in the river that separates the mountains and the territory. Since cats in Howlclan know how to swim, they'll swim to the island when going to visit Starclan and rest there before continuing to the pool. They will take a small drink from the pool and then go to sleep to commune with their ancestors. Quite often medicine cats will refer to the water here as Star Water since the stars are heavily reflected from the pool and it is night when they communicate at the pool.

Howlclan cats are peaceful and would rather compromise than fight, but that does not exclude them from having enemies. Howlclan is threatened by a small pack of coyotes. They don't really attack the clan but the do come around just outside of the border as if to patronize the cats. Their territory is beyond the pine forest and they are easily avoidable by any adventuring cats, but if they do happen to get caught, it is not an easy escape.
It is hard to get rid of the coyotes and only their leader is able to deter the rest of the pack. On such occasions the coyote leader, Pointed Fang, will come and talk to the cats. He is the only one able to communicate with other animals other than coyotes and then a compromise is made. The coyotes and Howlclan have made an agreement to avoid eachother's territory. Any cat on the pack's territory is either looking for death or not a part of the clan and the coyotes leave the clan alone as the coyotes don't hunt there anyway. Lone coyotes, however, still do threaten the clan although they're easier to fight off. Coyotes are another reason that, instead of apprentice ceremonies in camp, they yowl at Howling Rocks. Coyotes tend to stay away from territories that are already taken. 224 words |
Howlclan is full of various types of prey, not all of which is around for every season. Howlclan mainly eat mice, birds, rabbits, and other small rodents.
During the warm season of Greenleaf the clan will branch out to eat nonvenomous snakes, lizards and sometimes fish to those who are capable enough to get them. During the colder seasons of leaf-bare and leaf-fall they will go to their usual prey and maybe go to the Bat Caves and catch a few sheltering bats, if they don't fight back and if the cats are desperate enough. Ebonystar has been working on catching hawks as another source of prey, though the few attempts he has tried have failed and Patchstorm ended up ruining another attempt before she joined the clan. 128 words |
